Baby Photography: Tips and Ideas

                                               Baby Photography

One of the biggest challenges in Baby Photography is finding the right angle to shoot from. Below are some helpful tips and techniques that will help you create wonderful memories with your baby to be shared for years to come!

Newborn Baby photography

In the days following birth it is particularly difficult to get a good shot as babies tend to be always kept swaddled in blankets and bunny rugs and all you get to see of them is the top of their small head. This is in addition of all the bumps, scratches, marks and misshaped heads which makes finding a flattering angle one of the main challenges of new born baby photography. When all else fails, you may resort to getting a professional photography jobs specialist to capture those precious moments with your newborn.

Baby Photography Tips

One important tip for a good baby shot is getting down on their level. Getting down low and  close to the baby does present some challenge in terms of  the focal length, but it means you will end up with shots that present the baby’s world rather than us looking down on it from above.

You can try a number of different positions, such as over the shoulder, laying him back in your arms, sitting him up, lying him on his tummy, as each one can open up different possibilities.

Another challenge with newborns is getting them to smile. It is not so simple given the fact that they don’t spend a lot of time doing much of anything besides feeding, pooing, sleeping, or crying. You ‘ve got to be on the look out for those times when your baby seems most settled and content. He or she may not actually smile yet but there are times within the daily routine that are better than others for photos.  These are the times when we might get lucky and get wide open eyes and even a giggle or two.

Baby Portrait Photography

Choosing the right light is very important in order to create softer shades and rounded tones of the baby’s skin. Early morning, or late evening, finding a  shady area in the house or a  yard can be very good for baby photography. This will also ensure you don’t end up with lots of shots of your baby squinting. It is also a good idea to turn off that flash and use natural lighting whenever possible to prevent facial features and coloring  from looking washed out.

Baby Photography Props

As with all photography,  try avoiding unnecessary or distracting background elements and props. After all, the baby should be the main centre of attention, not the toys. You can create a neutral background using pillows or blankets that you can place around the  baby. Be creative; often some of the best shots are the imperfect ones. For example, photographing only part of the face, or only their small feet, can create a picture just as memorable than a full portrait style shot. On special occasions, professional baby photography may be a good option to ensure you get those perfect shots of your precious little one.
