Truth be known, when it comes to attempts at successful photography, family get togethers can be quite a challenge.

Family Portrait Photography

For a photographer, technical skills in family portraits are are very important, as is effective people skills. If we take a look at the history of professional family photography, we will find out that one of the very first uses of the camera was not to record historical events or for abstract art, but for photographing individuals and their families. Since photography was quite expensive at that time, and to take each photo required some considerable skills, professional photographers had to become masters of their trade and aim for getting things right the first time around, as well as being able to fit as many people as possible into one  frame. Professional photography jobs have evolved into real art since then, and still requires quire a skill and a good amount of artistic sense of proportion.

Family Photography Poses

Even if all of the people at your family get together are relatives, it’s likely they won’t all be getting close enough to each other. It could be the personal space thing, but it can be a real issue as fitting  everyone in tight can truly make a difference in the overall tone of the picture. Having the family members positioned physically close creates a certain warmth and radiates real family feeling. As a starter tip, you can try having people stand and sit at slight angles with each other, while their shoulder overlap. Make sure that the older members of the family are made sufficiently comfortable, with the necessary number of chairs provided.

Outdoor Family Photography

Before you get to your family meeting, give them some quidance in a wardrobe choice. Obviously that ultimately it is up to them and their own style to choose what they whant to wear but even just reminding them to coordinate the color scheme and avoid extreme colors or prints can make a big difference. This can give you an easier time at the time of shooting, and you will also have both options in color and black and white available.

Creative Family Photography Ideas

Be creative. You’d be surprised how well a few cheesy jokes can work to break the tension. Using interesting background or some props can also spice up the photo. Saying “Ok, I need everyone to focus”, or asking them to strike their best glamor pose could work really well. Other ways to get people to smile is to getting them to do something they don’t usually do. You can have them try running,  jumping, human pyramids or come up with really creative and fun poses, whatever comes to mind.

Effective Family Portraits Photography

You should choose the largest aperture setting that you can, while still keeping everything and everyone sharp. This can be a problem, especially when everyone is standing at different focal points. The solution can be to shoot a few clicks smaller, and then use the preview  to make sure everyone is looking good, adjust and continue. Remember that persistence eventually pays off!

Family photography is challenging and exciting, use the techniques mentioned above to turn the next family gathering into an unforgettable experience for all involved.

Still Life Photography: Techniques and Ideas

                               Still Life Photography

Whould you like to know what is still life photography ? The definition of still life photography is the photographic depiction of inanimate subject matter, most commonly a small grouping of various objects. Photography still life style, more so than any other styles of photography, gives the photographer more flexibility in the design and arrangement of the elements within a composition.

Still life photography can be a challenging and demanding art, in which the photographer is expected to perform their work with an effective compositional skill and a refined sense of lighting. The still life photographer also needs to know where to look for the right kind of props and surface. It is a marketable skill, too: photography jobs by talented professionals are always in high demand!

Still Life Photography Ideas

Black and white still life photography can be very effective.

It is also a good idea to choose objects that are of various sizes, textures and colours to make the still life image more interesting. This tendency in photographic art sometimes has led to somewhat bizarre combinations of diversified objects which had to be skillfully arranged in order to produce convincing, as well as aesthetically pleasing images. There is no limit to your creative expressions here!

Still Life Photography Tips

Feel free to experiment and refine your arrangements and lighting as much as you want. Still life photos can even be taken in quite a small space. Even if the size of your planned still life object exceeds the size of your light box/tent, it can still be successfylly arranged and lit with using relatively cheap and readily available equipment materials. Some things you are only going to learn by trial and error.

Still Life Photography Techniques

When taking a shot make sure that your PoF is set on the desired focal point of the arrangement- it costs nothing to take a test shot and verify that the whole arrangement is sharp enough. The second method is to use a focus stacking technique. This involves taking a series of shots  while focusing on different parts of the arrangement, and gradually progressing, usually from front to back.   The aperture and shutter settings need to remain constant throughout the sequence of shots, which means that your auto focus points must correspond with all the evenly spaced key areas within your arrangement. This will obviously require your camera to be mounted on a very sturdy tripod, such as the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT. Software such as Helicon or CZM may then be used to stack all the images into one super sharp image, or you can try to do this manually in Photoshop.

Still Life Photography Lighting

If you want to use the light from the desk lamp, which is rather harsh, it can be a good idea to use a tripod to support a water pipe insulation tube pushed on the tripod handle.  This can serve as as a boom that supports a translucent sheet of plastic parcel packing, which you can get from anywhere, especially from furniture shops! You can also double up the layers to vary the strength of light. You can also experiment with different backgrounds by using plaster or filler and straw on plasterboard.

Still Life photography is a fascinating field to explore and enjoy – we hope the ideas and tips mentioned above will enhance your experience and ensure a picture-perfect outcome!

Food Photography: Links, Tips, and Ideas

                                  Food Photography

If you are interested in learning more about food photography, this page is for you! Below you will find many helpful tips and ideas for the most successful and effective food photography experience.

Food Photography Lighting

You should treat the food items you’re trying to photograph, as you would do any other still life object and make sure that it has adequate lighting. One of the best places to photograph food is next to a window where there is a lot of natural light. You can also enhance it with a flash bounced off a ceiling or wall in order to give it a more balanced lighting as well as to cut out the shadows. Using daylight will help you to keep the food items looking much more natural.

Creating picture perfect images of food is a marketable skill, as skillful food photography jobs are in high demand by numerous advertising agencies and food books publishers.

Food Photography Tips

Always pay attention not only to the arrangement of the food items itself but also to the context that you put it in, such as the platter or a bowl and any creative table settings around it you can think of.  However, don’t clutter the picture with a too many table settings – it will make the photo look over-crowded; you should consider using just one or two extra elements such in the arrangement, such as a flower, a glass, a fork,  or a napkin. These additional elements can often be placed in the background or foreground of your shot, in secondary positions.

The way food is set out on the plate is almost as important as the way that you photograph it. Pay close attention to the balance of color, shapes and sized of the food items in a shot and make sure to leave a way into the shot. To do this, you can use  leading lines and the rule of thirds in order to guide the  viewer’s eye into the dish. To get a better idea of this technique, you can take a look at  some cook books and see how the pros do this.

Remember that food doesn’t keep stay looking  appetizing for long,  so you’ll need to be  prepared to shoot it soon after it’s been cooked before it collapses, melts, wilts and/or changes its color.  One strategy is to have the shot completely set up with all the necessary props before the food is actually with a substitute a stand-in plate to get your exposure just right. Then when the food is ready, all you have to do is switch the stand-in plate with the real item and you’re ready to start your shooting session.

Maternity Photography: Poses, Ideas and Tips

                                            Maternity Photography

If you are looking for maternity photography tips, poses and ideas, I think you will find this page quite useful.

It is a common misconception about maternity photography that it is all about capturing the pregnant belly. This is not really accurate. The pregnant belly is a clear external sign of approaching change and the formation of a new life, but it  cannot be the sole subject of the photograph, otherwise we’ll end up with a boring, anonymous picture. To read more about effective maternity photography poses, click here: http://www.momphoto.com/posing_guide/the_basics.html.

Outdoor Maternity Photography

It is quite understandable why so many maternity sessions are done in studio.  Studio shoots are great because they give you privacy, and no one can argue with that. This is especially relevant if you’re going to do anything in less than a fully clothed mode. There’s something about being outside, however, that makes the maternity pictures particularly charming and irresistable. Emphasising the natural beauty of a woman who’s getting ready to bring new life into the world within the majesty of the outdoor setting can be breathtaking.

Of course an outdoor location for a maternity photoshoot can hace its own set of potential issues. Mainly it has to do with the public staring at the pregnant client. Although it may not be an issue for some, there are many moms who will consider their protruding belly to be a private body part, and will not be willing to show it off outside.

Maternity Photography Tips

No matter where you shoot, be it a studio, home,or outside, you should simplify your surroundings. The beauty of an expectant mother who is anticipating the arrival of her child has to be captured in a way that will allow this miracle to speak for itself. Pregnancy shouldn’t  require anything else to be present in a photograph to tell it’s own story. Any extras present in the frame that may actually distract from the story that’s  being told in a natural way. Pay close attention to the background. If you prefer someone else to be responsible for capturing this exhilarating time in a picture-perfect manner, you always have the option of professional maternity photography specialists, who will certainly perform their professional photography jobs in the best possible way.

Maternity Photography Ideas

Maternity portraits can be slightly trickier than regular portraits, so here are a few useful ideas for an effective maternity photo session.

Make sure that the pictures include not only the Mom with her belly, but Daddy, as well. A baby often comes into an established family unit, so if there are  siblings, make sure to include them in at least a few pictures, as well as any members of the extended family (or pets) who are present. Sometimes using some props or different backgrounds can liven up the photographs.

You might want to check this maternity photography blog for additional ideas: http://www.digital-photography-school.com/7-must-have-maternity-shots.

Maternity photography can be as challenging as it is exciting, we hope some of the above tips will turn this special time into an unforgettable experience for you and your loved ones.

Baby Photography: Tips and Ideas

                                               Baby Photography

One of the biggest challenges in Baby Photography is finding the right angle to shoot from. Below are some helpful tips and techniques that will help you create wonderful memories with your baby to be shared for years to come!

Newborn Baby photography

In the days following birth it is particularly difficult to get a good shot as babies tend to be always kept swaddled in blankets and bunny rugs and all you get to see of them is the top of their small head. This is in addition of all the bumps, scratches, marks and misshaped heads which makes finding a flattering angle one of the main challenges of new born baby photography. When all else fails, you may resort to getting a professional photography jobs specialist to capture those precious moments with your newborn.

Baby Photography Tips

One important tip for a good baby shot is getting down on their level. Getting down low and  close to the baby does present some challenge in terms of  the focal length, but it means you will end up with shots that present the baby’s world rather than us looking down on it from above.

You can try a number of different positions, such as over the shoulder, laying him back in your arms, sitting him up, lying him on his tummy, as each one can open up different possibilities.

Baby Photography Ideas

Another challenge with newborns is getting them to smile. It is not so simple given the fact that they don’t spend a lot of time doing much of anything besides feeding, pooing, sleeping, or crying. You ‘ve got to be on the look out for those times when your baby seems most settled and content. He or she may not actually smile yet but there are times within the daily routine that are better than others for photos.  These are the times when we might get lucky and get wide open eyes and even a giggle or two.

Baby Portrait Photography

Choosing the right light is very important in order to create softer shades and rounded tones of the baby’s skin. Early morning, or late evening, finding a  shady area in the house or a  yard can be very good for baby photography. This will also ensure you don’t end up with lots of shots of your baby squinting. It is also a good idea to turn off that flash and use natural lighting whenever possible to prevent facial features and coloring  from looking washed out.

Baby Photography Props

As with all photography,  try avoiding unnecessary or distracting background elements and props. After all, the baby should be the main centre of attention, not the toys. You can create a neutral background using pillows or blankets that you can place around the  baby. Be creative; often some of the best shots are the imperfect ones. For example, photographing only part of the face, or only their small feet, can create a picture just as memorable than a full portrait style shot. On special occasions, professional baby photography may be a good option to ensure you get those perfect shots of your precious little one.
